Media still too white for new SA Mazwai

BISHO -- Times Media Limited (TML) and some sections of the former white media came under sharp criticism yesterday from veteran journalist
Thami Mazwai for failing to transform their newsrooms to reflect the population composition of the country.

Mazwai, chief executive officer of Mafube Publishing, claimed TML has black shareholders but its newspaper managements all remained white.
He said the TML was far behind the Independent Newspaper Group, which has many black editors.

On the Daily Dispatch, Mazwai lashed out at the newspaper for not having a black or a Xhosa-speaking person in its top leadership despite
the fact that it served a mainly Xhosa market.

Mazwai said while transformation at universities and other institutions throughout the country was visible, the media had not changed since
apartheid. The form and attitude the media adopted against blacks during apartheid remained.

He challenged the media in South Africa to "go back to the drawing board".
